Das "Ophitron" ist ein Mikrowellen-Oszillator.
Über ihn wurde erstmals im J. SCI. Instrum.,1962, Vol 39, von der
Marconi-Osram Valve Co. Ltd. Brook Green, London, W.6, berichtet. Während bislang die Abstimmung der Mikrowellen-Frequenz durch mechanische Veränderung der Gehäusedimension erfolgte, wurden diese Schwierigkeiten im Rükwärts-Wellen-Oszillator BWO (Back-Wave-Oscillator) auf eine einfachere Weise gelöst. Die Fokussierung des Elektronenstrahl erfolgt elektrostatisch und die Frequenzabstimmung kann in einem weiten Bereich durch Veränderung des elektrischen Potentials erreicht werden. Dieser BWO war ca. 23cm lang und hatte einen Durchmesser von ca. 19 mm. Er konnte durch eine Spannungsänderung von 600V bis 2000V eine Frequenz von 8,5 bis 12,5 Ghz. erzeugen. The "Ophitron" is a microwave oscillator. The device was first time reported in J.SCI.Instrum., 1962, Vol.39 by the Marconi-Osram Valve Co. Ltd. Brook Green, London, W.6 The tuning of the microwave frequency was previously carried out by mechanical change of the housing (resonator) dimensions. These difficulties have been overcome in the back wave oscillator BWO in a simplier manner.
in Robert Clayton's book "The GEC Research Laboratories 1919 to 1984" on p.56 there is the following staement, " The Laboratories hoped they had produced a new type of valve, the Ophitron, but this did not come to successful exploitation." So I think it proves that this was a GEC development.
